About Us

The Gorsett Violin Shop is a family business, owned by Loryn Gorsett, culminating from a dream of combining many varied aspects of her years of experience in the field of music into one endeavor, with a touch of help from her ancestors in the field of art and woodworking.

As far back as 1900, her great-grandfather Carl Anderson in Chicago was carving wood as a furniture maker (see photo to the right of carved mirror in front waiting room).  A family of three generations of musicians and artists followed, spreading from Chicago to Washington State to California and Colorado.  A descendent of Carl Anderson--Douglas Anderson--Shirley Anderson (Davidson), Loryn gained her first interests in working with violins when she had the opportunity to live with the family of a violinmaker and teacher William Watson while in high school. She went on to apprentice three years in Seattle under the violin-maker Hermann Bischofberger, while attending the University of Washington.

Then, deciding to come to Colorado in 1976, she started working at KVOD radio, the classical station, as receptionist.  After a couple of years, she returned to school to study viola at the University of Denver graduate school.

She married Mike Gorsett and raised 3 children for the next 25 years, freelancing on violin and viola, and teaching Suzuki violin, at the same time, raising her own string quartet.  When her youngest child was 11, she started working in a violin shop repairing and selling instruments.

Then in 2007, after 12 years of repairing and selling, she found the opportunity to start her own violin shop in an area of the Denver metro area that was definitely in need, Centennial, Highlands Ranch, and Lone Tree.  Familiar with string teaching, and a member of a local community orchestra for 23 years, she is definitely not a stranger to the area.  She has a passion to promote excellence in teaching, instruments of quality and set up properly, and to provide a service to musicians to maintain their instruments to the highest degree.
